New blind and curtain cord standards for residential rental properties

The Victorian Government have added new regulations to the existing minimum standards for all rental properties with updated minimum standards for blind and curtain cords.

Understanding the danger

Young children can strangle themselves with looped curtain and blind cords. Unsecured blind or curtain cords claim the lives of one or two Australian children every year – at least 21 young children have died as a result since 2001.

A child can place the loop over their head and/or get tangled in loose cords when they are:

  • in a cot or bed where cords are hanging
  • playing near cords, or
  • standing on a chair, sofa or bed to look out of a window.
